Govt. Degree College Kupwara was established in 1988. Affiliated to University of Kashmir and recognized by the UGC under section 2(f) and 12 (B), the college started from a makeshift campus near Boys Higher Secondary Kupwara and in the year 2000 it shifted to its new/permanent campus at Bohipora on Kupwara Villgam road about 2 kms from the town centre. Spread over 8 hectares of land the college has an Administrative Block two 8-room Lecture Blocks, a Science Block, a Library Block, Computer Applications Block, an Admission Block, an Auditorium, a Meeting Hall, and a few more small buildings to run undergraduate courses in Arts, Science, Computer Applications and Commerce streams. Two separate hostels one each for Boys and Girls with an intake capacity of 60 are available to provide residential facilities for students’ coming from far-off places. Initially created with an intake capacity of around 350 students, the current enrolment of the college has exceeded 4000 with 45% girl students. The enrolment of girls has increased over the years which is indeed a healthy sign for this educationally backward area. It has been the endeavor of the college ever since its inception to strive hard to live up to the expectations and the aspirations of its different stakeholders. The college has the unique distinction of being the first among young colleges to get NAAC accreditation with B+ grade in 2004 and is preparing for re-accreditation. It is due to the dynamic, able and unstinted guidance of the faculty that the number of admissions of our students for different courses in the reputed universities of the country has substantially increased over the years and our students are now making to various competitive exams at regional and National level. The college firmly believes that only curricular activities are not enough to ensure all round development of the students, hence different co-curricular activities are regularly conducted in the college throughout the year to inculcate moral values, community sense and leadership qualities among its students and to boost and carve out their hidden talent.
